Group Presentations
In the 10 weeks of class, group presentations played a significant role. I learned collaboration and cooperation in a group setting. With my group, we did three Power Point presentations. in the first presentation, we learned about historical context of the written work, the Victorian Era. The second presentation was based on Conan Doyle's short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. We learned how several conventions of the detective genre were depicted in these stories. Lastly, in order to fully analyze modern day adaptations of the detective genre, we learned the basis of cinematic elements. - My group’s presentation was about The British Empire during the Victorian Era. We focused on the Indian Mutiny, The Raj period, and British colonization of India. We learned about the historical context of the novel The Sign of Four.
In this presentation, I researched about the Indian Mutiny and its role in the novel. Also, I refined and organized the presentation slides to include more relevant texts and pictures.

For this presentation, my group cooperated really well. I had the opportunity to make new friends and know more about them. In my opinion, our group members were responsible. We were able to complete our assigned tasks on time. In terms of the PowerPoint slides, I think we could reduce the amount of texts. Moreover, we should have related our information on The British Empire with The Sign of Four more. I think our presentation would be better if we could practice more because as this was our first presentation, we lack confidence. Without thoroughly practiced the presentation, our group presented a little over the time limit. But, we were able to interact with audience by making eye contacts.
Conan Doyle Short Story: “A Scandal in Bohemia” Analysis

My group’s presentation was about Conan Doyle's short story “A Scandal in Bohemia”. We summarized the plot with PowerPoint animation. Also, we chose few insightful excerpts from the story that were useful and relevant to our literary review essay and the mystery genre. Our highlighted conventions were the structured plot, the use of scientific method, and Sherlock Holmes' role as a genius.
In this presentation, I presented a convention of the mystery genre, which was the formulaic sequence of the plot. I used two scholarly texts, George Dove's The Reader and the Different Story and Leroy Panek's "Beginning" chapter from An Introduction to the Detective Story to show different elements of the formulaic sequence. Also, I organized the final product of the PowerPoint presentation.

For this presentation, our group was cooperative. We divided the work evenly. Three of us explained the selected conventions while one summarized the plot. Overall, I think my group mate’s summary of the plot was great. Also, we were able to provide examples about the conventions of the mystery genre. However, I could have done better by practicing more because I was nervous during the presentation. Also, another shortcoming of this presentation was the excessive amount of texts in the Power Point presentation.
Cinematic Elements: Camera Proximity

For this presentation, we were assigned into new groups. I was in a group with Justin Block and Vivian Wang. My group's presentation was about camera proximity and scale. We chose to define and explain six different shots which included extreme longshot, long shot, medium longshot, medium shot, close-up shot, and extreme close-up shot. In addition, we provided scenes from the television series Sherlock to serve as examples for different types of shot.
In this presentation, I researched and presented three types of scale: medium shot, close-up shot, and extreme close-up shot. I defined these scales and explained the purpose of utilizing the indicated types of shots. I was responsible to create and organize the PowerPoint presentation.

For this presentation, our group members were responsible. I enjoyed working with my group. I think we did great on this project. The text on our Power Point presentation was succinct with different pictures to illustrate the types of shots. Also, we were able to practice and rehearse several times before presentation. I enjoyed this project a lot because I can learn about different cinematic elements. I never paid attention to how a film or movie is produced. I always focused on the plot instead. This project was a great learning experience for me to enhance my curiosity and openness.
